Comfort has several aspect to it. All are CRUCIAL in the overall experience of comfort, and if you don’t exercise each aspect you don’t have true & genuine comfort. And what this means to you is your problems will most likely go unresolved; you or your partner will still feel misunderstood, invalidated, hurt or offended; you or your partner will still feel alone and unable to express real thoughts, feelings, beliefs, hopes, dreams, fears & anxieties; your marriage will continue to be a place of hurt disappointment, and unfulfillment – leading to divorce. This means you continue to ‘hide out’ from each other and only show the parts of yourselves you think you can; there are still parts of each of you which you think (consciously or unconsciously) you cannot reveal, express, or share. As a result, you are not your real & genuine self; you are living a sham, you are denying your own right to be loved & accepted as the real you.

Comforting someone, and receiving comfort, isn’t difficult – it’s not rocket-science; in fact, even kids can do this if someone like myself shows them the right way. Like I said, there’s several crucial aspect to comfort, and here they are:

1. Listening to someone without interruption, denial, or defensiveness.

2. Clarifying what the person is saying. This involves summarizing what you heard & asking clarifying questions.

3. Validating how the person feels.

4. Creating a mutually-beneficial resolutions to the problem at hand.

5. The feeling of relief (which if you do steps 1-4 the right way, relief will be a natural by-product). With relief you can also expect to feel more peace; less stress; a sense of feeling important, valued, respected, & heard; a sense of resolution; beginning to feel conflict does not have to be threatening; feeling more comfortable bringing up problems or requests as to what you would like to see different.

Keep something in mind. Comfort is a SKILL. It isn’t memorizing a math formula which once you memorize you simply apply and get the same results every time. Comfort is a skill you must continually practice if you want to master it. And like any other skill, such as swimming, playing tennis, singing, painting, creating and sticking to a budget, and so forth, the first time you do it it’s going to feel awkward. You’re going to feel uncomfortable. You’re not going to know what you’re doing. You may even feel silly. Maybe you think it ‘won’t work’ or you’re just not ‘any good at it’. I’m sure these were your experiences with these other skills I mentioned, however, as you continued to practice and get coaching, you got better and better, more and more comfortable.

You CAN learn to give and receive comfort. And really if you truly want to experience a new level or the next several levels of peace, love, happiness, passion or fulfillment in the relationship with your spouse you WILL learn to give and receive comfort. You’re marriage won’t get better without it; your problems won’t get fully resolved without it; there won’t be real intimacy without it; there won’t be real healing without it. You won’t be able to stop your divorce without comfort. Like a drain clogged up only allowing a little water through, your marriage will only allow a little of the love, passion, fulfillment & happiness out there waiting for you. Do you want to experience more passion (or perhaps you don’t even have any passion right now and would settle for feeling some) in your marriage? How about wanting more intimacy? What about less stress, more peace & more fun? Of course you do! I don’t know ANYONE who doesn’t want a BETTER marriage, regardless of how great it may already be.

Comfort is the highway taking you to Love City, Passion-ville, Fulfillment Square, & Happiness Town. And if you’re feeling chocked up and dry-eyed from the dustiness of a marriage which is in danger of dying, jump on the Comfort Highway to get a different experience and create a different future!

Everybody May Not Love Your Dog

Sometimes we dog lovers forget that many people don’t share our adoration for these four-legged furballs. A recent advice column on Newsday.com featured a letter from a dog-fearing worker who was upset because her boss often brought his boxer to work and let it freely roam the office. Many times, people will complain to a local government official about dogs running loose in a public park. Or, you may simply have friends who don’t often come to your house out of fear that they will get slobbered on by your dog.

Not everyone is a dog lover, but you can make them more tolerant of those of us who are by observing a few simple rules of “Canine Owner Etiquette.”

Pick Up After Your Dog

This is one of my personal pet peeves (pardon the pun) when I take me dogs out in public. I will go to bag up my dog’s poop, and there will inevitably be two or three other presents in the same vicinity, and the perpetrating dogs and owners are long gone.

Now, if that bothers someone who likes dogs, imagine the crazed response you would get from someone who doesn’t like dogs. Owners, do yourself and other dog owners a favor by being courteous to others using public spaces, and clean up after your dog. You should always have poop bags with you when you’re out with your dog, and in some places, cleaning up after your pooch is a matter of law.

Use A Leash

Letting your dog run loose in public isn’t only annoying to some people; it can be dangerous to your dog as well. Even if your dog is perfectly trained to come on command, letting him run loose in a park or other public venue can be asking for trouble. One wrong turn might land your dog in front of a car in the parking lot, in the middle of someone’s picnic spread, or on top of a small child that happened to wander in to his path.

Any of these could put your pet in danger from a car or an angry parent. This can even run you afoul of the law in some places, as well. No matter how well your pup is at home, plan to keep him on lead when out in public.

Train For Proper Greetings

You may run into many people who want to pet your dog when you are out together, and you’ll find others who want your dog to stay far away, but you’ll find very few people who want your dog jumping on them. Before walking in public, make sure you’ve got your dog under control. Train your dog to meet people on lead by sitting and waiting for affection. If you have trouble getting to that level at first, walk your dog on a short lead and don’t stop to meet people. Instead, keep walking and keep your dog’s attention on you until you can train him to greet people correctly, especially if you have a large dog. You might think it’s funny, but not everyone enjoys a big, sloppy lick in the face.

Handling your dog properly in public not only makes people you encounter happier, but it makes the all of us dog owners look good by association. Be courteous whenever you and your dog are out, and encourage your dog-walking friends to do the same.

Unfortunately, most dogs shed to some extent, even the so-called non-shedding breeds, but this group of small dogs are likely to shed much less than average:

ShihTzu

Although this small breed may occasionally deposit a bit of long hair on your carpet, for the most part, it’s a breed that sheds minimally which makes it a good choice for you if you’re allergic to dog hair and housework. Watch out if you have children though, this breed can be a bit feisty.

Dachshund

This breed sheds only minimally and requires little grooming. The female dachshund tends to shed a bit more than the male, particularly unsprayed females. The smooth haired and the wire haired dachshund tend to require more grooming than the long haired variety.

Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier is not only a friendly and agreeable companion dog, he also tends to shed very little, requiring only a weekly brushing. They are also considered hypoallergenic meaning they don’t tend to exacerbate allergy symptoms. This may be your ideal choice if you have allergies and are looking for a low maintenance, non shedding dog breed.

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is considered to have a non shedding coat which makes this dog breed ideal if you have allergic symptoms. Unfortunately, the Bichon Frise is considered high maintenance in the grooming department, requiring a haircut and bath on a monthly basis as well as frequent brushing at home to prevent mats and tangles. This is not the breed for you if you have minimal time to devote to dog grooming.

West Highland Terrier

This dog breed sheds very little although they do require regular brushing and grooming about every six weeks. They have a double coat consisting of a hard, wiry outer coat with a softer inner coat. You may find it easier to have a professional trim and groom your Westie, although with practice you should be able to do it yourself at home.

Although there is no truly shed proof dog breed in existence, these five, small non shedding dog breeds should provide you with some relief from the constant appearance of fur on your carpeting and in your house. Plus, if you have dog related allergies, these dogs breeds may allow you to experience canine companionship without the associated allergy symptoms.
